BarCamp Gold Coast 2013

A free community event, the BarCamp Gold Coast 10 was organised by the founder and current President of Gold Coast TechSpace – Steve Dalton, by the current Secretary of Gold Coast TechSpace – David Tangye and Open Source Software Engineer – Anna Gerber.
It was a fantastic event with intense social interactions, interesting discussions, well-organised workshops, clear visual demonstrations and plenty of practical advice – just like this one that I was able to capture on the spot:
On a serious note, I can honestly say that I was listening and learning as much as I could. I mean, seriously, where else would you find such a fantastic opportunity to meet with people like Singularity University Ambassador (NASA Ames Research Center), Adjunct Professor at Bond University and Adjunct Professor at Griffith University – Dr Clarence N W Tan.
Dr Clarence N W Tan shared with us what he learned at Singularity University about Exponential Technologies and their impact on Industry.

I felt very lucky to be there. Just imagine, that in a matter of a few hours I was able to meet and have a conversation with Adjunct Professor and Cloud Architect of Cloud Aid Solutions at Bond University – Dr Michael J Rees. Also, I met and talked with Business Coach, Social Media Strategist and LinkedIn Specialist- Des Walsh.
I was fascinated with the passionate Open Source Software Engineer – Anna Gerber. She is a technical project manager at the University of Queensland’s ITEE eResearch Lab and her comprehensive talk about Open Knowledge Foundation Australia encouraged us to seek ways of involvement.

Steve Dalton talked about a very newsworthy initiative – Village Telco. Did you know that today, with combining low cost wireless mesh networking technology and Open Source telephone software, it is possible to build community based phone systems? Believe me, this is an incredible opportunity to create cheap community operated telephone infrastructure for the less fortunate people in under-developed countries. Thank you, Steve Dalton! It was a truly inspirational talk!
During the event we heard many memorable ideas, we participated in expert sharing sessions and we observed a few demonstrations of individual projects. I was quite intrigued by the project, presented by Web Developer at Jumbo Interactive Ltd – Pavel Kalinov.
With a PhD on “Intelligent Web Exploration” in his pocket, he surprised me with the delightful idea of building an Ancient Roman-style town in Queensland. Dressed up in a Roman costume, he captivated our imagination and engaged us in an intense conversation about all sorts of interesting possibilities.
I believe we all loved his idea. Pavel Kalinov also showed us some amazing historical artifacts:
Then it was time for Richard Frey to shine. Richard Frey arrived earlier, driving all the way from Coffs Harbour. He came and simply said that he is: “Interested in Robotics, 3D printing, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining and making stuff.” Then he went back to his car and brought back two skilfully build 3D printers (see picture below)…
…and many elegant figurines, produced by these printers. The Gold Coast TechSpace members were very impressed with Richard and his skills and we were pleased to read his message, the very next day: “Thank you all for a great day, was awesome to meet people with similar interests and passions for technology. Will be sure to come back for the next event and hopefully attend the TechSpace again before that.”
(In the picture below, one of the youngest members of Gold Coast TechSpace, Connor Thompson-Breuker is holding one of the Richard Frey creations. We all did…).
Secretary of Gold Coast TechSpace David Tangye did 99% of the event’s organisational work. His quiet confidence, combined with excellent managerial skills was highly value and appreciated by everyone. Special thank you to you, David Tangye, for making this event such a success. Additionally, David Tangye shared his practical idea of how to create mutual, financially beneficial referrals between experts in Information Technology.
Steve Davis was discussing ways of creating an opportunity for mutual support through collaboration and cooperation between small web-hosting business identities.
A new participant, introduced himself to us as a Joseph exercised the idea of building video controlled and fully functional military ships, based on WW1 or WW2 design, combining external and internal details from traditional materials and details produced with a 3D printer.
I felt as if time passed quickly. The BarCamp Gold Coast 10 organised by Gold Coast TechSpace was a huge success. Comments were pouring in on the MeetUp.com portal and more that 50 photographs were published.
David Tangye said: “I thought we had a very good mix of attendees both newcomers and return attendees from many past Barcamps. The topics were all very interesting to me as well.”
Steve Dalton concluded: “Awesome day – well done everyone! It’s the people that attend these things and take an active part that make this thing special.”
See you next time!!!
