The First Brisbane Writers Group Convention

“This will enable us to network and tap into all that knowledge and talent to help us become better writers” – Gillian Lloyd.

The first Brisbane Writers Group Convention generated considerable interest and was successfully executed by the enthusiastic Convention Coordinator Gillian Lloyd (NightWriters Writing Group).

On Saturday, July 27, 2013, at the Jagera Arts Centre, the first Brisbane Writers Group Convention delivered more than it promised. Writers didn’t just meet but established valuable connections by introducing their own groups – they shared knowledge and experience. Writers and group facilitators shared know-how of how writers groups organize their work and help each other to achieve their individual goals.

One by one, writers groups representatives went to the microphone and explained unique ways of how to attract new members, the best techniques they have found to criticize constructively; how they share knowledge and practical experience in publishing, how they help fellow writers to create writers blogs and websites, what exercises they use to improve skills in creative writing, how they are encouraging writers to use writers groups as a stepping stone to develop friendship, what works and what doesn’t work for a specific genre groups and even how they deal with the sensitive discussions of sexual scenes.

There was no lack of motivation to learn more from each other and everyone agreed with the conclusion of the highly prolific writer Rowena Cory Daniells: “Success of others becomes your shared success”.

Many writers groups praised their local Libraries for giving them the opportunity of using their facilities for group meetings and local author meetings with the public. The motion to write an open thank you letter to Queensland Libraries had total support and Brian Robertson was appointed to complete this task.

The suggestion of staging the Brisbane Writers Group Convention at least once a year was met with enthusiasm. The invitation by the Convention Coordinator Gillian Lloyd to create an online listing of all writers groups was embraced.
